Name: Paphinia hirtzii
Etymology: The genus name Paphinia refers to Paphia, an epithet of Aphrodite, and thus to Paphos on Cyprus. The specific epithet hirtzii is a patronymic honoring the orchid researcher Alexander Hirtz.
Origin/Distribution: Ecuador.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in moist tropical to montane forests. We recommend partial shade to bright, filtered light, high humidity, and good air circulation. Warm-temperate conditions of approximately 17–27 °C during the day and 13–20 °C at night are favorable. During growth, the substrate should remain evenly slightly moist but well-aerated.
Description and Notes: Paphinia hirtzii forms compact pseudobulbs with folded leaves and develops impressive, often downward-pointing inflorescences. The large, strikingly marked flowers are one of the genus's distinctive features. We cultivate the species in an airy yet slightly moisture-retaining orchid substrate and use as soft water as possible. Due to the hanging inflorescences, a hanging basket is particularly suitable. During active growth, we water and fertilize regularly; once the shoots have matured, we water a little more sparingly.
