Name: Ornithocephalus ecuadorensis
Etymology: The genus name Ornithocephalus is derived from Greek word elements meaning “bird” and “head,” referring to the unusual shape of the column. The specific epithet ecuadorensis means “from Ecuador.”
Origin/Distribution: Ecuador.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in moist tropical to montane forests. We recommend partial shade to bright, filtered light, high humidity, and good air circulation. Temperate conditions of approximately 14–25°C during the day and 10–18°C at night are favorable. The fine roots should be kept moist regularly and allowed to dry out quickly.
Description and Notes: Ornithocephalus ecuadorensis is a compact, fan-shaped botanical orchid without pronounced pseudobulbs. The leaves are densely arranged in two rows, while the small, pale flowers appear on delicate inflorescences. We prefer to cultivate the species mounted or in a very fine, airy orchid potting medium. We use as soft water as possible and keep the plant evenly slightly moist without allowing water to stagnate.
