Name: Oncidium strictum

Etymology: The genus name Oncidium derives from the Greek onkos, meaning “swelling” or “bump,” and refers to the callus of the lip; strictum means “upright” or “rigid.”

Origin/Distribution: Andean region of South America.

Location/Habitat: We grow this species in cool conditions at around 10–22 °C, with high humidity, bright filtered light, and continuous air movement. The roots receive water regularly but always remain well aerated.

Description and Notes: This sympodial orchid produces pseudobulbs with narrow leaves and upright flower spikes. A fine- to medium-grade, very airy orchid mix works well. During growth, we keep the plant evenly and slightly moist; after the pseudobulbs mature, we reduce watering somewhat.
