Name: Oncidium sphacelatum Lindl.
First described: 1841 in Sertum Orchidaceum.
Origin/distribution: Mexico through Central America to southeastern Venezuela.
Location/habitat: Pseudobulbous, epiphytic orchid of moist tropical habitats. Cultivate in bright to very bright and airy conditions. A medium, well-draining bark substrate is well suited. Water regularly during growth; keep slightly drier after the pseudobulbs have matured. Temperatures of around 17–29 °C are suitable.
Description and notes: Oncidium sphacelatum forms large plants with long, branched inflorescences that can bear numerous yellow, brown-marked flowers. Due to the extensive inflorescence, the species requires sufficient space and a stable hanging mount or support. Plenty of light promotes robust pseudobulbs and abundant flowering.
