Name: Oncidium peltiforme
Etymology: The genus name Oncidium is derived from the Greek onkos for “swelling” or “hump,” referring to the characteristic callus of the lip. The epithet peltiforme means “shield-shaped” and refers to the shape of a characteristic floral part.
Origin/Distribution: Andean region of South America.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in moist montane forests. We recommend bright to partial shade with filtered light, high humidity, and good air circulation. Cool-temperate to temperate conditions of approximately 12–24 °C during the day and 8–17 °C at night are favorable.
Description and Notes: Oncidium peltiforme is a pseudobulbous orchid with leathery leaves and multi-flowered inflorescences. The flowers have a distinctive lip, the shape of which is one of the species’ characteristic features. We cultivate the plant in an airy, well-draining orchid potting mix that retains a small amount of moisture. During the growing season, we water regularly with water that is as soft as possible and keep the roots slightly moist. Between waterings, the potting mix may dry out slightly, but should not remain completely dry for extended periods.
