Name: Oncidium maduroi
Etymology: The genus name Oncidium is derived from the Greek onkos for "swelling" or "hump" and refers to the characteristic callus of the lip. The specific epithet maduroi is a patronymic.
Origin/Distribution: Tropical America.
Location/Habitat: The species is adapted to moist tropical to montane forest sites and grows epiphytically. We recommend bright to partial shade, filtered light, high humidity, and good air circulation. Temperate conditions of approximately 14–25 °C during the day and 10–18 °C at night are favorable.
Description and Notes: Oncidium maduroi is a pseudobulbous orchid with leathery leaves and multi-flowered inflorescences. The flowers possess the distinctly pronounced lip typical of Oncidium. We cultivate the species in a loose, airy, and well-draining orchid substrate. During active growth, we water regularly with as soft water as possible and keep the roots slightly moist. Between waterings, the substrate may dry out slightly; we avoid prolonged waterlogging.
