Name: Oncidium fasciferum
Etymology: The genus name Oncidium is derived from the Greek onkos for “swelling” or “hump,” referring to the callus on the lip. The specific epithet fasciferum means “bearing a bundle” and refers to a characteristic feature of the plant or its inflorescence.
Origin/Distribution: Andean region of South America.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in moist montane forests. We recommend bright to partial shade with filtered light, high humidity, and excellent air circulation. Cool-temperate conditions of approximately 11–23°C during the day and 7–16°C at night are ideal. Prolonged exposure to intense heat should be avoided.
Description and Notes: Oncidium fasciferum is a pseudobulbous orchid with leathery leaves and multi-flowered inflorescences. The flowers have a distinctive lip and an elegant shape characteristic of Andean Oncidiums. We cultivate the species in an airy, well-draining orchid potting mix that retains a small amount of moisture. During active growth, we water regularly with water that is as soft as possible and keep the roots consistently lightly moist. Good air circulation is particularly important when humidity is high.
