Name: Oncidium chrysomorphum
Etymology: The genus name Oncidium is derived from the Greek onkos, meaning “swelling” or “hump,” referring to the characteristic callus on the lip. The specific epithet chrysomorphum is of Greek origin and means “gold-shaped” or “golden in appearance,” referring to the color of the flowers.
Origin/Distribution: Andean region of northwestern South America.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in moist montane forests. We recommend bright to partial shade with filtered light, high humidity, and good air circulation. Cool-temperate to temperate conditions of approximately 12–24°C during the day and 8–17°C at night are ideal.
Description and Notes: Oncidium chrysomorphum is a pseudobulbous orchid with leathery leaves and multi-flowered inflorescences. The flowers display yellowish to golden hues and the prominent lip characteristic of Oncidium. We cultivate the species in an airy, well-draining orchid potting mix that retains a small amount of moisture. During active growth, we water regularly with water that is as soft as possible and allow the potting mix to dry out only slightly between waterings. We strictly avoid waterlogging.
