Name: Vanda falcata (Thunb.) Beer ‘Amami’
Synonyms: Neofinetia falcata (Thunb.) Hu; Orchis falcata Thunb.
Etymology: The specific epithet falcata means “sickle-shaped” and refers to the curved leaves. ‘Amami’ indicates its origin or selection from the Amami Islands.
Origin/Distribution: The species is found in Japan, Korea, and parts of China; the Amami form is associated with Japan’s subtropical Amami Islands.
Location/Habitat: Epiphytic or lithophytic on trees and rocks. We recommend temperate conditions of around 12–26 °C, high humidity and good air circulation in summer. Keep it brighter, cooler, and drier in winter, but do not allow it to dry out completely.
Description and Notes: The traditional Japanese wind orchid grows compactly and monopodially, with leathery, sickle-shaped leaves arranged in two rows. White flowers with long spurs usually appear in early summer and have a sweet fragrance, especially in the evening. ‘Amami’ is considered a vigorous-growing form with comparatively broad leaves. Grow it mounted or traditionally on an airy mound of moss, and water regularly during summer growth.
