Description

Mediocalcar umboinense

Name: Mediocalcar umboiense Schuit.

Etymology: The specific epithet umboiense refers to Umboi Island in the Bismarck Archipelago.

First description: Described in 1997 by André Schuiteman.

Origin/Distribution: The species is native to the Bismarck Archipelago.

Location/Habitat: We grow Mediocalcar umboiense in intermediate to warm conditions at around 17–26 °C, with high humidity, bright filtered light, and good air movement. We keep the fine, airy substrate consistently slightly moist.

Description and notes: This small epiphytic orchid has a creeping growth habit with fleshy shoots and small, strikingly colored flowers. It is well suited to mounted culture or shallow containers, provided consistently high humidity is maintained.
