Name: Maxillaria variabilis Bateman ex Lindl. – 'Yellow' selection
Etymology: The genus name Maxillaria is derived from the Latin maxilla, meaning "jaw". The specific epithet variabilis means "variable" and refers to the wide natural variation of this species, particularly in flower colour and markings. 'Yellow' refers to the yellow selection offered here.
Origin/Distribution: Mexico and Central America.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically or occasionally lithophytically in forests at various altitudes. We recommend bright to partial shade with filtered light, good air circulation and moderate conditions of around 14–26 °C during the day and 10–18 °C at night.
Description and Notes: Maxillaria variabilis is a robust, compact to spreading orchid with pseudobulbs and narrow, leathery leaves. The flowers emerge singly from the base of the shoots. This selection is cultivated for its yellow flowers. During active growth, we water regularly with water that is as soft as possible. The substrate may dry out slightly between waterings but should not remain dry for extended periods. An airy, well-draining orchid substrate and regular air circulation promote healthy growth.
