Name: Maxillaria variabilis ‘Dark’
Etymology: Maxillaria derives from the Latin maxilla, meaning “jaw,” and refers to the flower’s structure; variabilis means “variable” and describes the species’ wide range of colors.
Origin/Distribution: Mexico and Central America.
Location/Habitat: An epiphytic, occasionally lithophytic orchid found at various elevations. Grow in bright to partially shaded, airy conditions. Keep a medium-grade, well-draining substrate evenly lightly moist during growth. Temperatures of around 14–27 °C are suitable.
Description and Notes: Maxillaria variabilis forms compact pseudobulbs with narrow leaves and produces individual flowers from the base over an extended period. The selection ‘Dark’ displays particularly dark reddish-brown hues that appear almost black. Water somewhat less in winter, without allowing the pseudobulbs to shrivel significantly.
