Description

Maxillaria swartziana

Name: Maxillaria swartziana

Etymology: The genus name Maxillaria is derived from the Latin maxilla, meaning “jaw”; swartziana honors the Swedish botanist Olof Swartz.

Origin/Distribution: Tropical America.

Location/Habitat: We grow this epiphytic species in intermediate to warm conditions at about 16–28 °C, with high humidity, bright filtered light, and good air circulation. During growth, we keep the airy substrate evenly and slightly moist.

Description and Notes: The species forms pseudobulbs with leathery leaves and usually produces its flowers from around the younger growths. A loose, well-draining orchid substrate with slight moisture retention is well suited. Once new growths have matured, we water somewhat less.
