Name: Maxillaria striata Rolfe
Etymology: Maxillaria is derived from the Latin maxilla for "jaw" and refers to the flower structure; striata means "striped" and describes the striking longitudinal markings.
Origin/Distribution: Ecuador and Peru.
Location/Habitat: Epiphytic or lithophytic orchid of moist Andean forests. Grow in bright to partial shade with high humidity and good air circulation. A coarse, yet slightly moisture-retaining substrate is suitable. Intermediate temperatures of about 15–25 °C with cooler nights are favorable.
Description and Notes: Maxillaria striata forms robust, densely packed pseudobulbs with single leathery leaves. The large individual flowers appear near the base and show striking reddish-brown to purple longitudinal stripes on a light background. Keep evenly moist during growth; avoid waterlogging and complete drying out.
