Name: Masdevallia virgo-cuencae Luer & Andreetta
Synonym: Alaticaulia virgo-cuencae (Luer & Andreetta) Luer
Etymology: The species epithet virgo-cuencae means “maiden of Cuenca” and refers to the “Chola Cuencana” in traditional dress.
First description: 1978 by Carlyle A. Luer and Ángel Andreetta.
Origin/Distribution: Ecuador and southern Colombia.
Location/Habitat: Epiphytic in moist montane and cloud forests across a broad elevation range of about 850–2,700 m. We recommend intermediate to cool conditions of approximately 12–23 °C, high humidity, shaded to bright filtered light, and steady air movement.
Description and notes: This compact species produces sturdy ramicauls, each with a single leathery, elliptical leaf. Successive inflorescences bear distinctive flowers with yellowish tips and a wine-red to purple-spotted sepal tube. Keep fine bark or sphagnum evenly slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging. Soft water is beneficial for the salt-sensitive roots.
