Description

Masdevallia sanctae-rosae

Name: Masdevallia sanctae-rosae Kraenzl.

Origin/Distribution: Colombia, known particularly from Antioquia; found at elevations of approximately 2,400 to 2,800 m.

Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in moist montane and cloud forests with filtered light and consistent humidity. In cultivation, we recommend cool to temperate conditions, around 10–22 °C, high humidity, and gentle, steady air movement.

Description and Notes: This high-altitude species forms compact clumps of leaves and attractive flowers with long, slender sepals. It requires reliably cool nights, especially in summer. We cultivate it in a fine, airy, yet moisture-retaining orchid potting mix. The potting mix should never dry out completely; however, waterlogging and stagnant air should be avoided.
