Name: Masdevallia niesseniae Luer
Etymology: The specific epithet niesseniae honors Andrea Niessen, a Colombian orchid grower.
First description: Described by Carlyle A. Luer in 1998.
Origin / Distribution: Colombia, where the species is known only from a limited area.
Location / Habitat: The small, epiphytic species grows in moist cloud forests at elevations of approximately 1,500–1,600 m. These areas are characterized by cool temperatures, high humidity, and good air circulation.
Description & Notes: Masdevallia niesseniae produces compact shoots with single, leathery, dark green leaves. The upright inflorescences each bear a strikingly large, bright orange flower measuring approximately 5 cm in diameter. We grow it in cool conditions with high humidity, good air circulation, and bright, indirect light. The growing medium should remain evenly moist and not dry out completely.
