Name: Masdevallia murex Luer

Origin/Distribution: Ecuador, known from the Zamora-Chinchipe province.

Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in moist montane and cloud forests with filtered light and consistent humidity. In cultivation, we recommend cool to moderate temperatures, around 10–22 °C, high humidity, and gentle, steady air movement.

Description and Notes: The flowers have a distinctive textured surface and an unusual shape that gives the species its unmistakable character. We cultivate them in a fine, airy, yet moisture-retaining orchid substrate. The substrate should never dry out completely; however, waterlogging and stagnant air should be avoided.
