Name: Masdevallia monicana Luer
Etymology: The genus name Masdevallia honors the Spanish physician and botanist José Masdeval. The specific epithet monicana is derived from the first name Monica as a tribute.
First described: In 1998 by Carlyle A. Luer in Monographs in Systematic Botany from the Missouri Botanical Garden 72: 111.
Origin/Distribution: Ecuador.
Location/Habitat: An epiphytic species of moist tropical forest. We recommend a bright, filtered location, high humidity, and gentle, steady air movement. It grows well in cool to intermediate conditions at approximately 14–24 °C, ideally with a noticeable drop in temperature at night.
Description and Notes: This compact Masdevallia produces individual leathery leaves on short shoots and the flowers characteristic of the genus, distinguished by their fused sepals. We use a fine, airy, moisture-retentive medium and keep the root zone evenly slightly moist. Soft water and regular, weak applications of fertilizer promote steady growth. The species does not require a pronounced rest period; heat, stagnant air, and roots that dry out completely should be avoided.
