Description

Masdevallia melanoglossa

Name: Masdevallia melanoglossa Rchb.f.

Etymology: The genus name Masdevallia honors José Masdeval; melanoglossa means “dark tongue” and refers to the strikingly dark lip.

Origin/Distribution: Andean region of South America.

Location/Habitat: We grow this species in cool conditions at around 8–21 °C, with high humidity, filtered light, and continuous air movement. We keep its fine root system evenly and slightly moist throughout the year.

Description and Notes: This compact species has the typical Masdevallia flower, dominated by its sepals. A particularly distinctive feature is its dark lip. We recommend a fine, airy substrate that retains a little moisture.
