Name: Masdevallia lata Rchb.f.
Synonyms: Alaticaulia lata (Rchb.f.) Luer
Etymology: The genus name Masdevallia honors José Masdevall; lata means “broad” and refers to the broad flower segments.
First described: 1877 by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach.
Origin/Distribution: The species is known from Costa Rica and Panama.
Location/Habitat: Unlike many highland Masdevallias, this species originates from warmer forest locations. We cultivate it in warm to intermediate conditions at approximately 18–28 °C, with high humidity, bright filtered light, and good air circulation.
Description and Notes: Masdevallia lata is a compact epiphytic orchid with leathery leaves and upright to ascending inflorescences. We keep the fine, airy substrate evenly moist and avoid both waterlogging and complete drying out.
