Name: Masdevallia hirtzii Luer
Etymology: The specific epithet hirtzii honors Ecuadorian orchid collector Alexander Hirtz.
First described: In 1988 by Carlyle A. Luer.
Origin/Distribution: Ecuador, especially the southeastern Andean slopes.
Location/Habitat: Epiphytic in humid montane cloud forests at elevations of approximately 1,200–1,650 m. We recommend cool to intermediate conditions of around 12–22 °C, very high humidity, shade, and steady air movement.
Description and Notes: This compact species forms dense clumps of narrow-elliptic leaves. Erect to slightly arching inflorescences bear bright orange to yellow-orange, tubular flowers with finely elongated sepal tips. Keep fine bark or sphagnum evenly moist while ensuring excellent drainage. Avoid stagnant heat in summer and allowing the plant to dry out completely.
