Name: Masdevallia guttulata Rchb.f.
Etymology: The genus name Masdevallia honors José Masdeval, a Spanish physician and botanist. The specific epithet guttulata is derived from Latin and means "provided with small drops or spots"; it refers to the characteristic spotted pattern of the flowers.
First description: Masdevallia guttulata was scientifically described by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach.
Origin/Distribution: Andean region in northwestern South America.
Location/Habitat: The species grows in humid montane forests, predominantly epiphytically under constantly high humidity and good air circulation. We recommend bright to semi-shaded, filtered light. Cool to intermediate conditions of approximately 10–22 °C during the day and 7–15 °C at night are favorable. The substrate should remain evenly slightly moist while being very well-aerated.
Description and notes: Masdevallia guttulata is a compact, pseudobulbless orchid with short ramicauls, each bearing a leathery leaf. The flowers are particularly attractive with their fine spotted to speckled pattern and the elongated sepal tips typical for Masdevallia. We water regularly using water that is as soft as possible and do not let the fine roots dry out completely. A fine, airy, and slightly moisture-retaining substrate is well-suited. High humidity should always be combined with continuous air circulation.
