Masdevallia decumana (large-flowered)

Name: Masdevallia decumana Königer

Etymology: The genus name Masdevallia honors José Masdeval; decumana means roughly “very large” or “impressive,” aptly describing this species’ strikingly large flowers.

Origin/Distribution: Ecuador.

Location/Habitat: We grow this epiphytic species in cool conditions at around 10–20 °C, with high humidity, bright filtered light, and continuous gentle air movement. We keep the fine roots evenly slightly moist and do not let them dry out completely.

Description and Notes: This compact Masdevallia stands out for its especially large flowers in proportion to the plant. A fine, airy substrate that retains a little moisture works well. Using soft water whenever possible and providing a marked nighttime temperature drop promote stable growth.
