Description

Masdevallia deceptrix

Name: Masdevallia deceptrix Luer & Würstle

Synonyms: Alaticaulia deceptrix (Luer & Würstle) Luer

Etymology: The genus name Masdevallia honors José de Masdevall. The epithet deceptrix derives from Latin and roughly means “deceptive” or “misleading.”

First description: The species was described in 1987 by Carlyle A. Luer and Rudolf Würstle.

Origin / Habitat: Venezuela, where it grows as an epiphyte in humid tropical mountain forests.

Description & Notes: A small, compact-growing Masdevallia with individual striking flowers on slender flower stems. We grow it in shade to bright indirect light, with high humidity and good air circulation. We keep the substrate evenly moist and do not let it dry out completely. We keep it cool, at around 12–20 °C.
