Name: Masdevallia dalessandroi Luer
Etymology: The genus name Masdevallia honors José Masdeval, a Spanish physician and botanist. The specific epithet dalessandroi honors the orchid collector and expert Roberto D'Alessandro, who was closely associated with the research of Ecuadorian orchids.
First description: Masdevallia dalessandroi was scientifically described by Carlyle A. Luer.
Origin/Distribution: Ecuador.
Location/Habitat: The species originates from moist mountain forests of the Ecuadorian Andes, where it grows epiphytically in constantly humid conditions. We recommend bright to partial shade, filtered light, high humidity, and very good air circulation. Cool to intermediate conditions of about 10–22 °C during the day and 7–16 °C at night are favorable. Prolonged heat should be avoided if possible.
Description and notes: Masdevallia dalessandroi is a compact-growing orchid without pseudobulbs. Short ramicauls each bear one leathery leaf. The striking flowers display the form typical of Masdevallia, dominated by three sepals with elongated tips. We keep the fine root system evenly slightly moist year-round and use soft water if possible. A fine, airy, and slightly moisture-retentive substrate is particularly suitable. High humidity should always be combined with continuous air circulation.
