Description

Masdevallia coccinea f. Alba

Name: Masdevallia coccinea f. alba (Linden) Luer
Synonym:
Etymology: coccinea = scarlet (referring to the original type species); alba = white — describes the pure white color form of this variety.
First description: The species was described by Linden in 1844; the form alba describes the naturally occurring white-flowered variant.
Origin / Distribution: Colombia (Central and Eastern Cordillera).
Location / Habitat: Terrestrial or lithophytic on moss-covered rocks and steep grassy slopes at elevations of 2400 to 3000 m. It is constantly exposed to cool temperatures, fog, and strong winds.
Description & Notes: Masdevallia coccinea f. alba is a robust, leafy orchid without pseudobulbs. It stands out for its large, elegant flowers, which rise far above the foliage on long, upright stems. While the typical form is bright red, f. alba has immaculate, pure white flowers with the characteristic sepal tube and broad, backward-curving sepals.

In cultivation, this form requires strictly cool to cold conditions and very high light intensity (but no intense heat) to thrive. Humidity should remain consistently high, while ensuring very strong air movement. Since the plant has no storage organs, the substrate (fine bark or sphagnum) must be kept moist at all times. Low-mineral water is essential for its sensitive roots.
