Name: Masdevallia civilis

Etymology: The genus name Masdevallia honors the Spanish physician and botanist José Masdevall. The Latin specific epithet civilis means “civil,” “civic,” or “cultivated” and was chosen as a descriptive name for the species.

Origin/Distribution: Andean region of South America.

Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in humid montane to cloud forests. We recommend partial shade to bright, indirect light, high humidity, and continuous air circulation. Cool to intermediate conditions of approximately 10–22 °C during the day and 7–15 °C at night are favorable. Prolonged heat and allowing the plant to dry out completely should be avoided.

Description and Notes: Masdevallia civilis is a compact, pseudobulb-free orchid with leathery leaves and the triangular flowers typical of the genus, whose sepals taper into elongated tips. We grow the species in a fine, airy orchid mix that retains a little moisture. We water regularly with the softest water possible and keep the roots evenly slightly moist, without allowing waterlogging.
