Description

Masdevallia attenuata

Name: Masdevallia attenuata Rchb.f.

Synonyms: Acinopetala attenuata (Rchb.f.) Luer

Etymology: The genus name Masdevallia honors José Masdevall; attenuata means “tapering” or “pointed,” referring to the narrow, tapering floral parts.

First described: 1871 by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach.

Origin/Distribution: The species is found from Costa Rica to western Panama.

Location/Habitat: We cultivate Masdevallia attenuata in cool to intermediate conditions at approximately 12–22°C, with high humidity, bright filtered light, and good air circulation. The fine, airy growing medium remains evenly moist.

Description and Notes: This compact Masdevallia produces leathery leaves and characteristic flowers with narrowly tapering sepals. We avoid complete drying out and stagnant, damp air.
