Name: Masdevallia Ximenita
Parents: Masdevallia Ximena Neira × Masdevallia Denis Roessiger
RHS registration: Masdevallia Ximenita is registered in the Royal Horticultural Society's International Orchid Register. The grex was registered by Ecuagenera in 2023.
Etymology: The genus name Masdevallia honors José Masdeval, a Spanish physician and botanist. Ximenita is the registered grex name of this hybrid.
Location/culture conditions: We recommend a bright to semi-shaded location with diffused light, high humidity, and very good air circulation. Cool-temperate conditions of about 10–22 °C are favorable, with cooler nights. The substrate should remain consistently slightly moist without being permanently waterlogged. Prolonged heat should be avoided if possible.
Description and notes: Masdevallia Ximenita combines Masdevallia Ximena Neira with Masdevallia Denis Roessiger. Its lineage includes Masdevallia datura, Masdevallia rex, and Masdevallia coccinea, among others. The plants grow compactly without pseudobulbs and form individual leathery leaves. The flowers can show a wide variation in hue, pattern, and shape and possess the characteristic elongated sepals of the contributing lines. We water regularly with soft water whenever possible and do not allow the fine roots to dry out completely. A fine, airy, and slightly moisture-retentive substrate works well. High humidity should always be combined with continuous air movement.
