Name: Masdevallia Sol del Medio Dia
Parents: Masdevallia davisii × Masdevallia floribunda
Registration: Registered by Ecuagenera in the RHS International Orchid Register on October 25, 2012.
Etymology: The genus name Masdevallia honors the Spanish physician and botanist José Masdeval. The Spanish grex name “Sol del Medio Día” means “Noon Sun” and refers to the radiant appearance of the flowers.
Location/growing conditions: The combination of the two parents produces a compact Masdevallia suitable for cool to intermediate conditions. We recommend approximately 14–24 °C, a significant drop in temperature at night, bright filtered light, high humidity, and gentle, consistent air circulation. The fine, airy, moisture-retaining potting medium should remain evenly moist; the roots must neither dry out nor sit in compacted, wet medium.
Description and notes: Masdevallia Sol del Medio Dia combines the intense yellow to orange flowers of Masdevallia davisii with the more compact, heavily flowering influence of Masdevallia floribunda. Depending on the seedling, the flowers may vary slightly in color intensity, markings, and shape. Cool nights, soft water, and regular, weak feeding during active growth promote even development.
