Name: Masdevallia Pangueña
Parents: Masdevallia peristeria × Masdevallia uniflora
Registration: Registered by Ecuagenera with the Royal Horticultural Society in 2012.
Etymology: The genus name Masdevallia honors the Spanish physician and botanist José Masdevall. The grex name Pangueña refers to a person or origin from El Pangui in Ecuador.
Location/Growing Conditions: This primary hybrid prefers cool to temperate conditions of about 10–22 °C with cool nights, shade to moderately bright light, 70–90% humidity, and constant gentle air movement. Keep a fine, airy, moisture-retaining medium of fine bark and sphagnum evenly moist; the roots should neither dry out completely nor sit in standing water.
Description and Notes: Masdevallia Pangueña combines the broader, open sepals of M. peristeria with the compact growth and upright inflorescences of M. uniflora. The strongly colored flowers appear well above the foliage and have a triangular basic shape with short to medium-length sepal tails. Protection from summer heat and soft, cool watering are particularly important; a dry rest is not required.
