Name: Masdevallia Machu Picchu
Parents: Masdevallia ayabacana × Masdevallia coccinea
RHS Registration: Masdevallia Machu Picchu is registered in the Royal Horticultural Society's International Orchid Register. The grex was registered by Beall in 1986.
Etymology: The genus name Masdevallia honors José Masdeval, a Spanish physician and botanist. The grex name Machu Picchu refers to the well-known historic site in the Peruvian Andes.
Location/Culture: We recommend a bright to semi-shaded location with diffused light, high humidity, and very good air circulation. Due to the two parent species, cool to cool-temperate conditions of about 8–21 °C are favorable, with significantly cooler nights. Prolonged summer heat should be avoided if possible. The substrate should remain consistently slightly moist.
Description and Notes: Masdevallia Machu Picchu is a primary hybrid of Masdevallia ayabacana and Masdevallia coccinea. The plants grow compactly without pseudobulbs and form individual leathery leaves on short shoots. The flowers can combine the intense coloring and elegant shape of M. coccinea with the characteristic floral features of M. ayabacana. Variations in hue, pattern, and shape are possible between individual seedlings. We water regularly with the softest water possible and do not allow the fine roots to dry out completely. A fine, airy, and slightly moisture-retentive substrate is suitable. High humidity should always be combined with continuous air circulation.
