Name: Masdevallia Machangara
Parents: Masdevallia Copperwing × Masdevallia barlaeana
RHS registration: Masdevallia Machangara is registered in the Royal Horticultural Society's International Orchid Register. The grex was registered by Ecuagenera in 2023.
Etymology: The genus name Masdevallia honors José Masdeval, a Spanish physician and botanist. Machangara is the registered grex name of this hybrid.
Location/cultivation conditions: We recommend a bright to semi-shaded location with diffused light, high humidity, and very good air circulation. Cool-temperate conditions of approximately 10–22 °C are favorable, with cooler nights. The substrate should remain evenly slightly moist without being permanently waterlogged. Prolonged heat should be avoided if possible.
Description and notes: Masdevallia Machangara combines Masdevallia Copperwing with Masdevallia barlaeana. Masdevallia veitchiana and Masdevallia decumana are also involved in the lineage through Copperwing. The plants grow compactly without pseudobulbs and form individual leathery leaves. The flowers can exhibit vibrant colors, distinct patterns, and the characteristic elongated sepals of the involved lines. We water regularly with the softest water possible and do not let the fine roots dry out completely. A fine, airy, and slightly moisture-retaining substrate is favorable. High humidity should always be combined with continuous air circulation.
