Description

Masdevallia Fuchsia Dawn

Name: Masdevallia Fuchsia Dawn gx
Etymology: Fuchsia Dawn = refers to the vibrant fuchsia-pink to magenta color of the flowers, reminiscent of the glow of a morning sky.

First description: Registered in 1996 by M. Pendleton (Orchid Zone) with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).
Origin / Distribution: Artificial multihybrid. The parent species involved (Masdevallia coccinea, Masdevallia infracta and Masdevallia schroederiana) originate from the cool to intermediate, moist mountain and cloud forests of Central and South America (especially from the Andean regions).
Location / Habitat: Grown epiphytically or in fine, well-draining substrates under cool to intermediate conditions. Requires a bright to partially shaded location year-round without direct midday sun, consistently high humidity, and continuous, gentle air circulation.
Description & Notes: Masdevallia Fuchsia Dawn is a fascinating, compactly growing hybrid (Masd. coccinea × Masd. Pixie Shadow), prized for its exceptional color intensity. The plant grows in a clump and produces upright, leathery leaves without pseudobulbs. The striking flowers stand individually on upright, slender stems. Characteristic are the strongly fused sepals, which form a cup-like structure and taper to fine tips. The color spectrum ranges from a bold, bright fuchsia pink to deep magenta, often with a velvety surface sheen.

In cultivation, the substrate (preferably fine sphagnum moss or fine bark mixtures) must never dry out completely due to the lack of water retention. Watering with low-salt water (rainwater or reverse osmosis water) and a noticeable drop in nighttime temperatures are crucial for healthy growth and abundant flowering.
