Name: Masdevallia Falcata
Parents: Masdevallia coccinea × Masdevallia veitchiana
RHS Registration: Masdevallia Falcata is registered in the Royal Horticultural Society’s International Orchid Register. The grex was registered by Lawrence in 1899.
Etymology: The genus name Masdevallia honors José Masdeval, a Spanish physician and botanist. Falcata is the registered grex name of this primary hybrid.
Location/Cultural conditions: We recommend a bright to semi-shaded location with diffused light, high humidity, and very good air circulation. Due to both cool-growing parents, temperatures around 8–21 °C (46–70 °F) are favorable, with significantly cooler nights. Prolonged heat should be avoided if possible. The substrate should be kept consistently slightly moist.
Description and notes: Masdevallia Falcata is a classic primary hybrid of Masdevallia coccinea and Masdevallia veitchiana. Both parents contribute to large, striking flowers with elongated sepals and vivid colors; variations in color and shape are possible between individual plants. The plants grow compactly without pseudobulbs and form individual leathery leaves on short shoots. We water regularly with the softest possible water and do not allow the fine roots to dry out completely. A fine, airy, and slightly moisture-retentive substrate is beneficial. High humidity should always be combined with continuous air circulation.
