Name: Masdevallia Amazon Leopard
Parents: Masdevallia princeps × Masdevallia ayabacana
Registration: Masdevallia Amazon Leopard is registered in the International Orchid Register of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). The grex was registered by Ecuagenera in 2023.
Etymology: The genus name Masdevallia honors José Masdeval, a Spanish physician and botanist. Amazon Leopard is the registered grex name of this hybrid.
Location/Cultivation Conditions: We recommend a bright to partially shaded location with diffuse light, high humidity, and very good air circulation. Cool to temperate conditions of about 10–22 °C are favorable; cooler nights and protection from prolonged heat are particularly important. The substrate should remain evenly lightly moist.
Description and Notes: Masdevallia Amazon Leopard is a primary hybrid of Masdevallia princeps and Masdevallia ayabacana. Both parents can contribute to robust, strikingly marked flowers with long sepal tails. The plants grow compactly without pseudobulbs and produce individual leathery leaves on short stems. We water regularly with as soft water as possible and do not allow the fine roots to dry out completely. At the same time, excess water must be able to drain away quickly. A fine, airy, and slightly moisture-retaining substrate is particularly suitable. High humidity should always be combined with continuous air circulation.
