Name: Lycaste schilleriana pincelada
Etymology: The genus name Lycaste refers to Lykaste, a figure from Greek mythology. The specific epithet schilleriana is a patronymic. The horticultural name “pincelada” comes from Spanish and means “brushstroke”; it describes the striking color pattern of the flower, which appears as if applied with a brush.
Origin/Distribution: The underlying species is one of the Central American representatives of the genus Lycaste.
Location/Habitat: For cultivation, we recommend a bright to partially shaded location with filtered light, good air circulation, and moderate to high humidity. Temperate conditions of approximately 17–25°C during the day and 11–17°C at night are ideal. While new shoots are developing, the growing medium should remain evenly slightly moist.
Description and Notes: This color form, known as “pincelada,” has the robust sympodial growth typical of Lycaste, with pronounced pseudobulbs and large, folded leaves. The plant is particularly prized for its distinctive brushstroke-like flower pattern. During active growth, water generously with the softest water possible and keep the growing medium evenly slightly moist, without allowing water to accumulate. Once the pseudobulbs have matured, reduce watering slightly. Humidity of approximately 60–80% and good air circulation are ideal. We recommend a loose, airy orchid potting mix that retains some moisture.
