Name: Sudamerlycaste locusta (Rchb.f.) Archila
Synonyms: Lycaste locusta Rchb.f.
Etymology: The genus name Sudamerlycaste refers to the South American distribution of this Lycaste relative; locusta means “locust” and refers to the greenish appearance of the flowers.
Origin/Distribution: The species originates from the Andes of South America.
Location/Habitat: We cultivate Sudamerlycaste locusta in cool to intermediate conditions at approximately 13–22 °C, with high humidity, bright filtered light, and good air circulation. During the growth period, we keep the airy substrate consistently slightly moist.
Description and Notes: The species produces robust pseudobulbs, large pleated leaves, and green to yellow-green flowers from the base of mature pseudobulbs. After growth is complete, we reduce watering slightly, without allowing the plant to dry out completely.
