Name: Lycaste brevispatha
Etymology: The genus name Lycaste refers to Lykaste, a figure from Greek mythology. The specific epithet brevispatha is composed of Latin or Latinized word elements meaning “short” and “spatha,” referring to a short, spatulate floral feature.
Origin/Distribution: Central America.
Location/Habitat: The species grows predominantly epiphytically in moist montane forests. We recommend bright, filtered light, moderate to high humidity, and good air circulation. Moderate conditions of approximately 15–25°C during the day and 10–17°C at night are favorable. During active growth, the substrate should remain evenly slightly moist while being very well aerated.
Description and Notes: Lycaste brevispatha produces robust pseudobulbs with large, folded leaves and attractive individual flowers on separate flower spikes. We cultivate the species in a loose, airy orchid substrate that retains a small amount of moisture. We water and fertilize regularly while new shoots and roots are developing. Once the pseudobulbs have matured and growth slows, we reduce watering slightly, but do not allow the plant to dry out completely for extended periods.
