Description

Lepanthes tortilis

Name: Lepanthes tortilis Luer
Synonyms:
Etymology:
tortilis = twisted / turned — refers to the characteristic shape of the petals or the flower’s often slightly twisted structure.

First described: 1983 by Carlyle August Luer in “Phytologia.”
Origin / Distribution:
Colombia and Ecuador.
Location / Habitat:
An epiphyte growing in cool, moss-rich cloud forests at elevations of approx. 1800 to 2500 m. It prefers very shady, saturated environments with constant humidity and moderate air movement.
Description & Notes:
Lepanthes tortilis is a graceful miniature orchid with upright, slender ramicauls sheathed in lepanthiform sheaths. The leaves are broadly elliptic to ovate, leathery, and often dark green with a purplish tint on the underside. The flowers appear sequentially on fine, threadlike racemes shorter than the leaf. The flowers are structurally complex; the sepals are usually yellowish-brown, while the petals and lip often have contrasting purple or red hues and display the twisted morphology that gives the species its name.

In cultivation, the species requires cool to cold temperatures and very high humidity (above 80%). As it has no storage organs, it is extremely sensitive to drying out; the growing medium (fine sphagnum or mounted on tree fern) must remain moist at all times. High-quality water (rainwater or reverse-osmosis water) is essential for this species’ long-term survival because it is sensitive to mineral salts.

Culture: Cool to intermediate conditions at around 12–22 °C, shady, and with very high humidity. Never allow the fine, airy growing medium to dry out completely.
