Name: Lepanthes peruviana Damián & B.T.Larsen
Etymology: The genus name Lepanthes is formed from Greek word elements for “scale” and “flower.” The specific epithet peruviana refers to Peru.
First described: 2017 by Alexander Damián and B. T. Larsen in Phytotaxa.
Origin/Distribution: Peru, Amazonas Region, Chachapoyas Province.
Location/Habitat: Epiphytic in very moist, cool cloud forests at an altitude of approximately 2,800 m. For cultivation, we recommend approximately 10–20 °C, consistently high humidity of about 80% or more, gentle air movement, and shady to bright filtered light.
Description and Notes: This miniature orchid produces upright ramica stems with lepanthiform sheaths and elliptical leaves. In proportion to the plant, the purplish-red, yellow-veined flowers with long appendages are strikingly large; the petals and lip add red to pink accents. Best cultivated mounted on fine sphagnum or in a very fine, airy substrate. Never allow the fine roots to dry out completely and use as soft, low-salt water as possible.
