Description

Lepanthes pelvis

Name: Lepanthes pelvis Pupulin & D.Jiménez

Etymology: The genus name Lepanthes is composed of Greek words for “scale” and “flower.” The specific epithet pelvis refers to the pelvic-shaped lip.

First described: 2009 by Franco Pupulin and D. Jiménez.

Origin/Distribution: Costa Rica.

Location/Habitat: Epiphytic in moist montane forests at approximately 2,100 m. The species prefers cool to temperate conditions of approximately 10–20 °C, very high humidity, filtered light, and gentle air movement.

Description and Notes: The tiny flowers appear singly or in pairs on the leaf. Dark purple, finely pubescent sepals enclose the unusual lip. A padded mount or fine sphagnum is suitable; never allow the roots to dry out completely.
