Name: Lepanthes ortegae Luer & Hirtz
Etymology: The genus name Lepanthes is derived from Greek and refers to the scaly or finely textured flowers; ortegae honors an Ecuadorian co-discoverer of the species.
Origin/Distribution: The species is native to Ecuador.
Growing conditions/Habitat: We grow Lepanthes ortegae in intermediate to warm conditions at around 17–25 °C, with very high humidity, bright filtered light, and gentle, continuous air movement. We keep the fine roots constantly slightly moist in sphagnum moss or a very fine, airy substrate.
Description and notes: This miniature produces highly detailed flowers only a few millimeters in size, which appear one after another on the fine inflorescences. It is particularly well suited for a display case or terrarium with consistently high humidity.
