Name: Lepanthes ligiae Luer & R.Escobar
Etymology: The genus name Lepanthes is derived from the Greek lepis ("scale") and anthos ("flower"). The epithet ligiae honors Ligia Moreno de Posada, who successfully cultivated this species.
First description: The species was described in 1991 by Carlyle A. Luer and Rodrigo Escobar.
Origin / Habitat: Colombia, endemic to the Antioquia region of the Central Andes, in moist montane forests at approximately 1500–2600 m. It grows epiphytically.
Description & Notes: An unusually large, robust epiphyte for a Lepanthes, with upright shoots and single elliptical, leathery leaves. The densely packed inflorescence bears numerous small flowers sequentially; the flowers reach approximately 5 mm. We cultivate it in shade to bright indirect light, with high humidity, good air circulation, and consistent moisture. We keep it cool to temperate, at approximately 9–22 °C.
