Name: Lepanthes felis Luer & R.Escobar
Etymology: The Latin specific epithet felis means "cat" and refers to the flower shape, which resembles ears or a cat's face.
First described: 1983 by Carlyle A. Luer and Rodrigo Escobar.
Origin/Distribution: Colombia.
Location/Habitat: Epiphytic in cool, moist montane cloud forests at approximately 1,500–2,500 m elevation. We recommend approximately 10–20 °C, over 80% humidity, shaded to bright filtered light, and constant gentle air movement.
Description and Notes: This compact miniature orchid produces upright ramicaules with lepanthiform sheaths and one leathery, ovate-elliptical leaf each. The spectacular red-purple-marked flowers appear sequentially; the tips of the dorsal sepal create the cat-like impression that gives the species its name. Cultivate mounted on fine sphagnum or in a very fine, airy substrate. Never allow the roots to dry out completely and avoid prolonged summer heat.
