Description

Lepanthes estrellensis

Name: Lepanthes estrellensis Ames

Etymology: The genus name Lepanthes is derived from the Greek lepis ("scale") and anthos ("flower").

First description: The species was described in 1923 by Oakes Ames.

Origin / Habitat: Costa Rica, in premontane rainforests to cloud forests as well as disturbed primary forests at approximately 1800 m. It grows epiphytically.

Description & Notes: Miniature orchid with a single upright, leathery leaf and short, sequentially blooming inflorescences. The flowers are approximately 5 mm in size.
