Description

Lepanthes dictydion

Name: Lepanthes dictydion Luer & Hirtz
Synonyms:
Etymology: dictydion = little net / net-like — refers to the Greek word for "little net" (diktyon) and describes the striking, dark net-like venation on the leaves.

First description: 1895 (or during the more modern revisions) described by Carlyle A. Luer and Alexander C. Hirtz.
Origin / Distribution: Ecuador and Peru.
Location / Habitat: Growing epiphytically in moist montane cloud and cloud forest forests of the Andes at altitudes of approx. 1,400 to 1,800 meters. It thrives in deep shade with high humidity under constantly cool to intermediate climatic conditions.
Description & Notes: Lepanthes dictydion is an exceptional miniature orchid that is primarily prized for its highly decorative foliage. The small, almost circular to elliptical leaves show a striking, high-contrast net structure of dark veins on a lighter background. The thread-like inflorescence develops on the upper side of the leaf and successively produces tiny, fleshy flowers. The flowers have pointed sepals with almost horn-like diverging tips, giving them a fascinating architectural structure.

In cultivation, this species requires a cool-temperate to intermediate microclimate (approx. 14 to 23 °C) with a noticeable drop at night. Since it has no storage organs, the plant must never completely dry out. Ideally, it is grown mounted on cork or fern root pieces with a base of living Sphagnum moss or in very fine, airy net pots. Consistently high humidity of over 75% as well as continuous, gentle air circulation are essential to prevent standing moisture and resulting fungal infections on the leaf axils. Perfect for cultivation in moist display cases or terrariums.
