Description

Lepanthes cloesii

Name: Lepanthes cloesii Luer

Etymology: The genus name Lepanthes is derived from Greek words for “scale” and “flower.” The specific epithet honors Belgian orchid enthusiasts Patrick and Martine Cloes.

First described: In 1999 by Carlyle A. Luer.

Origin/distribution: Peru.

Location/habitat: Epiphytic on moss-covered branches and trunks in high-elevation cloud forests at around 2,800 m. The species prefers cool conditions of approximately 8–18 °C, very high humidity, shade, and gentle air movement.

Description and notes: This miniature orchid produces strikingly long inflorescences, on which numerous small flowers can open in succession. A padded mount or very fine, airy sphagnum works well. Keep the fine roots evenly moist and avoid both heat and prolonged dry spells.
