Description

Lepanthes calocerca

Name: Lepanthes calocerca

Etymology: The genus name Lepanthes is derived from Greek word elements. The specific epithet calocerca combines Greek word elements for "beautiful" and "tail" and refers to the flower's strikingly elongated or tail-like structures.

Origin/Distribution: Andean region of South America.

Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in moist montane forests. We recommend shade to bright, diffused light, high humidity, and continuous air movement. Moderate conditions of approximately 13–24°C during the day and 9–17°C at night are favorable. The very fine roots should remain evenly and lightly moist.

Description and Notes: Lepanthes calocerca is a compact miniature orchid with delicate shoots and small, intricately structured flowers. Its unusual proportions and fine floral details make the species particularly interesting to lovers of Pleurothallidinae. We prefer to cultivate it mounted with some moss or in a very fine, airy orchid substrate. A well-ventilated display case or terrarium with high humidity provides favorable conditions. We use as soft water as possible and avoid allowing it to dry out completely.
